Kindness Coalition Blessing Box Initiative
Kindness Coalition is currently raising funds to place new Blessing Boxes throughout our service area—a 45-mile radius of Monticello, Indiana—helping make food and basic necessities more accessible to neighbors who may need a little extra help.
What is a Blessing Box?
A Blessing Box is a small, publicly accessible pantry where community members can take what they need and give what they can. Boxes may contain nonperishable food, personal care products, household essentials, and other appropriate items that can help individuals and families.
There is no application or appointment required to use a Blessing Box. The goal is simple: provide an accessible resource for neighbors while creating an easy way for others in the community to help.
What is Kindness Coalition providing?
Funds raised through this initiative will help purchase or construct new Blessing Boxes, prepare them for placement, provide Kindness Coalition Blessing Box signage, and supply the initial stock of food and essential items.
Our goal is not simply to place boxes, but to establish them in locations where they can become sustainable community resources.
Where will the boxes be located?
Kindness Coalition will partner with churches, businesses, and community organizations within a 45-mile radius of Monticello, Indiana that are interested in hosting a Blessing Box.
Potential locations will be considered based on community need, accessibility, visibility, and the ability of the host organization to help care for the box over time.
This initiative is focused on establishing new Blessing Boxes in communities and locations where an additional resource would be beneficial. We also value the work already being done through existing Blessing Boxes and welcome opportunities to collaborate on ideas that further the shared goal of getting food and essential items to people who need them.
Who keeps the boxes stocked?
Kindness Coalition will provide the initial stock for each new box. After placement, the host organization will take primary responsibility for monitoring, maintaining, and helping keep its Blessing Box stocked.
The community can participate too. Individuals, families, churches, businesses, and organizations can place appropriate items directly into a Blessing Box whenever they would like to help.
That community participation is an important part of the model: neighbors helping neighbors.
What can be donated?
Appropriate donations generally include unopened, nonperishable food and basic necessities that can be safely stored in an outdoor pantry. Items should be within their expiration or best-by dates and in their original, undamaged packaging.
Because Blessing Boxes are exposed to changing temperatures, items requiring refrigeration or that could become unsafe when stored outdoors should not be placed in the boxes.
Can my church, business, or organization host a box?
We would love to hear from churches, businesses, and community organizations within 45 miles of Monticello that are interested in becoming a Blessing Box host.
Hosting involves more than providing a location. We are looking for partners who share the vision of making practical help accessible and who are willing to help monitor, maintain, and support their box after it is placed.
How can I help?
You can help by giving toward the placement of new Blessing Boxes, donating appropriate items once boxes are installed, sharing the initiative with others, or connecting us with a church, business, or community organization interested in hosting one.
Every box represents something simple but important: a place where someone who needs help can find it—and a place where someone who wants to help can do something about it.
